If you are a Southern Peter Kay fan, then perhaps you could answer my question ...
Why do you like Peter Kay?
In many interviews and articles his humour has been sold as being distinctly Northern ... so why would a Southerner find him funny??

Shandy drinking southern ponce here ;D I think Peter Kay's humour is universal. He certainly has lots of fans down here. Funny is funny the world over Funk

I don't really understand why he's described as having a northern humour, when as far as I can see it's just cos he's from the north. The content and technique of the comedy is universal, as Funk says. I've made rose perfume and have been to working men's clubs in the south! Whoo! I don't think that makes me a token northerner...
I think the distinction is just London journos and their amazement that life exists outside of the capital. You get the same thing wherever you look: Music: You always get "Manc band Oasis", never "London band Blur", then you get special reports on architecture or clubs in Manc or Liverpool in the Sunday papers, like they're brand new concepts. And look at the slating the Commonwealth Games initially got, basically cos London was jealous!
Personally, I think the main difference I've seen is with the London fans being a lot quieter and self concious than the northern ones. But, maybe that was just the gigs I went to...

i believe that people from anywhere in britain can identify with Peter kay's humour because not only is he northern he is british, british humour is very distinctive and i think Peter is at the very epicentre of british humour. i think people concentrate to much on the fact that he is northern and not on the fact that he is british. i know i find him absloutely knicker wettingly funny because he uses senarios and situations that everyone can identify with. For example the stories he told about dinnerladies and the actons people do like making gestures for wanting a cup of tea. he's approach is friendly and he makes the audience feel relaxed like you are sitting in your front room listening to some you know chat.

I think Peter Kay is just genuinely funny. Very working class humour, just cos I come from down South, doesn't mean I don't understand it. As for the club scene, I'm living the dream and am a member of one! Couldn't help laughing at a comment in the NEI 4 fanzine about clubs being stuck in a 1971 time warp, you don't realise how true that is!

We go to working men clubs in the south, and to be quite honest, they are just the same as the Phoenix Club!!!, run by small minded old men. When we watched Phoenix Nights we were in stitches. The C.I.U. clubs are a whole new breed, men only bars etc and they all hate children, don't ever let them breath during bingo. Peter Kay has got it spot on

i'm a northerner who goes to school in the south and i've noticed its only those who think london is the best and only city in the world who are oblivious to northern humour. Thats why they hate me, the pricks. But, in genral, people who take the time to know of other places, not just that shit hole london, every time i go there i come back snotting out carbon monoxide, these people do get his humour. Therefore, its a certain type of people who don't like northhern humour, only there seems to be many of these down south.

I have a bezzy mate who lives in West Sussex and she loves PK and PN. It isnt so much the humour as the accent and some phrases that initially left her quizzical. For example, phrases such as, 'are yer 'avin a brew?' or 'put big light on' simply arent used down south. The humour translates because, despite what we would like to believe, the majority of us all live fairly similar lives in the UK, like for like of course.

I am a northerner finding myself in the south now for 7 years, I have educated no less than a dozen soft southern shandy drinking fairies into the delights of PK, mainly through classics such as garlic bread? Booked it packed it... and put big light on
Strange thing is, they have all said "ooh my mum used to do that""my dads just like that"
Humour is universal

I don`t think it matters where the comedian comes from,be it Bolton or Cowes or Chile or Brussels..besides,the English humour IS the best in the world and theres no one to touch it. Its a shame Phoenix Nights isn`t nominated for a golden globe.......win hands down!lol..better than the office,me thinks(I do occasionally, anyway!)

Not only the best humour but the most twisted as well. Especially when it's written. You can turn the most innocent one-liners into pearls of abuse with a swipe of the tab key.
