A lot of members have posted good information about free PC security software on the boards and I thought I would bring this Information together in one post. Hope it helps those that need it. www.panicware.com/product_downloads.html Look for free version about 3/4 way down the page. Stops them annoying popups. Thanks to Big Jack Afro. www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php Free virus checker already posted on board. Thanks again to whom ever posted. www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zadb_zadown A firewall which stops hackers entering your PC, a bit tricky to configure but well worth it. spybot.eon.net.au/ Gets rid of any spyware (a sort of way to make your computer call a specific website). Thanks to Funk. www.moosoft.com/thecleaner/ Only 30 days free but worth downloading and checking for any Trojans installed on your PC (will also clean and repair). If you use Kazaa (which ever version) Imesh or any other file sharing software you leave a backdoor open on your PC. In Kazaas case port 1214 is quite easy to hack and information on how to do this is quite easily obtained, firewalls do not help as you are opening a port to share your files. Heres how it works:- You download MP3. The MP3 has a hidden Trojan in the file. You play MP3, Trojan activated. Next time you connect to your file sharing program the hacker gets in through the open port and has full control over your PC. A friend (yes a friend, not me) of mine recently used this software and found 20 Trojans installed and he had a good firewall, so you can't be to careful.

Just remember to keep the anti-virus & spybot etc updated. There is no point in having out of date anti virus software.

Some good stuff there - got Spybot and AVG running already but I'm gonna give the Trojan one a check. Don't think you can get them off MP3's tho?

Just use Kazaa lite, disable file sharing and uncheck act as a supernode and you should have no problems! Kazaa lite also allows you to disable port 1214. Also go to Symantec web site and use their PC security check, it runs a check on your PC to see how vulnerable you are to virus Trojans etc. security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=symNeil

RE:- MP3s, Can't say it happens a lot, more likely from a file download but it's allegidly possible. Some of the record companies are allegidly installing trojan like code in the MP3's to catch people who download. So if you download, copy to CD or MD and then delete.

The best thing to do if you are worried about security is to use a router, then if someone tries to hack you they will only ever get the router. This is definately a good idea if you use broadband If some1 attaches a trojan onto an MP3 file then the media player that you use must know how to execute the code and most media players can't do that, maybe Windows Media player would call on Internet Explorer to run it but any good Anti Virus software would pick it up. Trend have a free virus scanner called Housecall uk.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/products/housecall_pre.php this is probably the best free scanner out there. But if you want a good on access file and email scanner, use Symantec Anti Virus, you have to pay around £30 but it's well worth it and you get a years woth of free updates. Forget Kazza, BitTorrent is the way to go www.suprnova.org/ you'll need to download a client and the downloads start straight away, no need to wait days for your file.
