Spikey's Home Truths
The Diary is glad to see Phoenix Nights funnyman Dave Spikey is keeping his feet firmly on the ground. The jovial comic has been playing to sell-out audiences with his Overnight Success stand-up tour, which culminates in a Christmas special at Manchester's Palace Theatre next month.
But not for him the champagne lifestyle. Instead, he tells me his favourite guest appearance was signing his new tour video at Tesco in Chorley.
He says "It was great because it's my home town. But there were still a few people who didn't know who I was." The Diary caught up with Dave on a visit to Manchester's Virgin Megastore yesterday. He appears surprisingly sprightly for a man who has been on the road for the best part of a year.
Indeed, he tells me he will be sad to see the end of the tour. No surprise, as the show has earned him a nomination for the Comedy Award at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards next week.
Let's hope he can find time to finish the sit-com he is writing for ITV. The newspaper office-based show starts filming in May. But Dave says he's only written one episode so far!
